The Paideia seminar will be centered on the abstract theme of JUSTICE in examining how the judicial system fulfills its role to establish justice. The readings are actual court decisions from 1914 determining whether or not a Syrian/Lebanese constituted a "free white person" who could then be naturalized. Based on the Common Core Standards, students will examine the strength of opposing arguments and the degree to which they advance justice.

STUDENT PRE-SEMINAR READING GUIDE:

THE FIRST READING IS A COURT DECISION IN SOUTH CAROLINA IN WHICH THE JUDGE DENIED NATURALIZATION.

THE SECOND READING IS A COURT DECISION BY THE FEDERAL COURT THAT OVERTURNED THE SOUTH CAROLINA DECISION.
